<abstract>This file represents the estuarine shoreline for Currituck County, North Carolina. The shoreline is based on 2008 county level digital orthophotos that were flown between from May 30th and July 15th, 2008th, at 1/2 foot ground sample distance (GSD) resolution. The shoreline was generated from the imagery through heads-up digitizing, and was digitized at a scale between 1:300 and 1:500 feet. Shoreline type is based on adjacent land cover, wetlands in particular, and the presence of commercial, recreational and erosion control structures.</abstract>
<purpose>
The North Carolina Division of Coastal Management (DCM) has specific needs to establish a detailed estuarine shoreline (including the identification of shoreline related structures) for non-regulatory purposes that can serve as a basis for examining DCM's existing policy language within its estuarine and ocean system areas of environmental concern (AEC). This shapefile represents a contiguous shoreline for Currituck County and serves as a representation of the land/water, vegetation/water and structure/water interfaces.
This dataset was created to assist government agencies and others in making resource management decisions through the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

<distliab>The North Carolina Estuarine Shoreline Mapping Project is a multiyear initiative designed to increase awareness of existing shoreline types and the prevalence of hardened structures along the North Carolina estuarine coastline. This effort will not result in the production of a complete hydrographic dataset for the coastal/estuarine environment. The final data set generated through the ESMP will not be used as a regulatory line and therefore may not be applicable to litigation entered into by the state or agencies within DENR. While efforts have been made to ensure that these data are accurate and reliable, DCM cannot assume liability for any damages, or misrepresentations, caused by any inaccuracies in the data, or as a result of the data to be used on a particular system. DCM makes no warranty, expressed or implied, nor does the fact of distribution constitute such a warranty. These data represented in an estuarine shoreline are believed to be logically consistent, though no tests were performed. All arcs will be snapped by the nodes to create consistently tied strings without node dangles and to ensure line geometry is topologically clean. While this shoreline dataset is dependent on aerial imagery taken for the 20 coastal counties prior to 2010, DCM understands that the position of the shoreline might change as the natural land changes or as better maps and more recent imagery become available.</distliab>

Shoreline types captured by DCM's Estuarine Shoreline Mapping Project are broken down into the following categories. A brief explanation of each shoreline type follows its name. Explanations for the various shoreline types are taken from a DCM report by Geis and Bendell entitled, "Charting the Estuarine Environment: A methodology spatially delineating a contiguous, estuarine shoreline of North Carolina."
Swamp Forest (SHORE_TYPE 10)
Swamp forests are very poorly drained forested wetlands or shrub/scrub communities that are regularly, occasionally, seasonally, or semi-permanently flooded by lunar tides, wind tides, and/or overbank flow. In the estuarine system, swamp forests occur along the margins of freshwater and brackish sounds and along the lower reaches of coastal rivers and streams. Swamp forests can occur directly on the estuarine shoreline or grade down slope to marsh. This shoreline type is an expansive swamp forest with no sediment bank behind it, or if a sediment bank is present it is landward enough that regular, non-storm event waves dissipate before reaching the bank. A common example of swamp forest is tidal cypress gum swamp. Swamp forests are typically only identifiable on aerial photography by the presence of "trees in the water." Cypress trees have the ability to live in the water and adapt to the slowly rising sea or eroding shoreline. If sea-level rise or erosion occurs too fast, swamp forest trees will drown, as they cannot adapt quickly enough. In this case, photography will show dead trees or remnants of dead trees standing or lying near the water's edge. The shoreline is landward of the trees in the water and the canopies of mainland trees mask the shoreline. Although a shoreline is not exactly discernable from aerials, an apparent shoreline along the waterward edge of the mainland tree canopy can be digitized to represent the shoreline in these areas.
Marsh (SHORE_TYPE 20)
Coastal marshes are low-lying meadows of herbaceous plants that occur along the margins of estuaries and along the shorelines of coastal rivers and streams. Most marshes along the estuarine shoreline are subject to regular or irregular flooding by lunar tides and/or wind-generated water level fluctuations. Some riverine flooding may be the most important source of hydrology in areas not subject to tidal flooding. Marsh plant species composition is highly dependent on salinity, with distinctly different marsh communities occurring within freshwater, brackish, and saline zones and within the regularly and irregularly flooded areas within each zone. Common coastal marsh species include: Cord Grass (Spartina alterniflora), Black Needlerush (Juncus roemerianus), Glasswort (Salicornia spp.), Salt Grass (Distichlis spicata), Sea Lavender (Limonium spp.), Bulrush (Scirpus spp.), Saw Grass (Cladium jamaicense), Cat-tail (Typha spp.), Salt Meadow Grass (Spartina patens), and Reed Grass (Spartina cynosuroides). Marsh shorelines, although easily recognizable from aerial photography, pose difficult situations when digitizing. Marshes can be either a narrow swath of vegetation along upland areas or an extensive area of coverage that includes a myriad of canals, cuts and channels. These expansive marshes can also include marsh islands surrounded by water and not associated with another expansive marsh. In most cases, the vegetation/water interface or waterward edge of marsh vegetation will be the digitizing line for marshes.
Sediment Bank (SHORE_TYPE 30)
Sediment bank shorelines often consist of a gently seaward sloping, wave-cut platform below water level, and an associated steeply sloping, wave-cut scarp on the landward side of the beach. Low sediment bank shorelines, which are less than 5 feet of vertical height, are dominant in the eastern portions of the estuaries and consist of unconsolidated sediment on top of a clay bed, which usually occurs at or slightly below sea-level. High sediment bank shorelines are defined as over 5 feet of vertical height above the high tide line, are dominant in the westernmost portion of the estuarine system and consist of tight clay and moderately to tightly cemented sandstone near their base with unconsolidated water-bearing sands and clayey sand above. Depending on the bank composition, most high sediment bank shorelines have well-developed sand beaches. Sediment bank shorelines are very common in North Carolina. They make up all natural shorelines that do not have wetland vegetation (marsh or swamp forest) along it. Sediment bank shorelines can have numerous other characteristics/features associated with it, including, but not limited to: submerged aquatic vegetation, mud flats, oyster reefs, woody debris (from drowned and converted swamp forest), sandy beaches, and even small patches (not noticeable from aerial photography) of wetland vegetation.
Modified (SHORE_TYPE 40)
Because many shorelines are no longer natural, a shoreline type of "modified" will be employed for any shorelines with obviously visible erosion control shoreline structures. For example, bulkheads and riprap revetments are widely utilized to halt a loss of coastal property, to aid recreational activities, to keep shipping channels and ports open, for aesthetic purposes, or to simply hold the current shoreline in place. A variety of erosion control structures exist and this category includes structures that are both parallel and perpendicular to the coastline. Structures parallel to the shoreline include bulkheads, revetments, seawalls and breakwaters. Structures perpendicular to the coastline include, jetties and groins. In addition to erosion control structures, modified shorelines often have recreational structures associated with them such as boat docks, piers or floating platforms. Structures can alter the shoreline's land/water interface when constructed parallel or perpendicular to the shoreline. These structures will be part of the digitized shoreline only when they are coincident with or make up the shoreline itself. Modified shorelines are generally easily digitized, as highly developed areas often have structures approximating a straight line along vast expanses of shoreline. Difficulty associated with delineating modified shorelines deals with a technician's ability to discern the structure from provided imagery.
Miscellaneous (SHORE_TYPE 99)
Miscellaneous shorelines are connecting lines that approximate breaks in the estuarine shoreline. A shoreline category type of "miscellaneous" will be employed for digitized shorelines that do not follow the existing shoreline or that fail to approximate the land/water interface. Specifically, these shorelines will represent spatial artifacts or boundaries that occur when; 1) a CAMA coastal county boundary has ended; 2) the digitizer has reached DCM's designated upstream extent of a river or tributary (20 feet in width); 3) where a connection has been made linking neighboring CAMA coastal county shorelines when the shorelines do not line up exactly based on differences in the time or date the imagery was collected; 4) where technicians approximate the shoreline across the mouth of an agricultural irrigation canal; or 5) where the North Carolina State boundary is reached.
